New Yahoo Messenger Features

User feedback on Yahoo's new Messenger desktop app is not the response Yahoo hoped for when it decided to bring back its Messenger service on the desktop.

Jul 20, 2018 Back in the day, it was ICQ that lead the IM craze and today Microsoft rules that roost with MSN Messenger, but Yahoo! Has added a lot of interesting features to its instant messenger contender, one of which we liked a lot: Yahoo's Cam-to-Cam video chat feature (pictured here). The client looks pretty good, but we found it slow to say the least. Yahoo decided to revive the service as it was one of the most successful offerings from Yahoo. They released a new version of Yahoo Messenger in 2015 to replace the older version. The newer version of messenger had many features, but it was not as successful as the older one was. People didn’t get on with the new product as there were better.

Back at the start of June, Yahoo announced it decided to pull the plug on its classic Yahoo Messenger app, which it hadn't updated for a few years anyway.

The company decided to focus on a Messenger client that only worked on the Web and via its iOS and Android applications.

Users reacted with sadness to the news, pleading with Yahoo to continue to support the app.

Yahoo Messenger brought back from the dead at the end of July

At the end of July, Yahoo announced that it had a change of heart and launched a new desktop client for Windows, albeit a different one from the old desktop app we knew and loved. That desktop client ceased to work on August 5, when the servers that powered it were shut down for good.

Users who didn't know of the impending shutdown went to the Yahoo Messenger website and downloaded the new desktop client, thinking they'd get an updated version.

What they found was a stripped-down version of the old app, which lacked many of the features that made it great. As you'd expect, users didn't react very well.

Currently, the Yahoo Messenger Desktop feedback forum is filled with vitriol slung at Yahoo's new app. The top three and the sixth most voted topics are from people asking Yahoo to bring back the old Messenger.

The others are just people complaining, sometimes in all caps, about the lack of features that were included in the former app. Some of them were what made Yahoo Messenger different, or are basic IM features that, unbelievably, the new version lacks.

Here's a list of some of the main topic names currently trending on the feedback forum:
